Swing, Sister Swing!
A tribute to the great ladies of Jazz in the 1930s & 40s
The Ebony Big Band tells the story of the great female jazz artists through the music of such greats as
Bessie Smith, Blanche Calloway, Mahalia Jackson, Billy Holiday, Lena Horne and Anne Mae Winburn and the International Sweethearts of Swing.
Everybody knows men usually take top positions in history even though women have contributed at least as much and in some cases more. Women have played music on every instrument, in every style and era of the music's history, and have contributed to and engaged the same aesthetic and technical developments as their male colleagues.
Jazz is one of those areas where women haven’t always gotten their due respect but this year, “The Ebony Big Band”, performing on Feb. 28th in the Werkstatt Der Kulturen for the closing celebrations of Black History Month in Berlin, will share the story of the Black American female jazz artist during the times between the Harlem Renaissance and the end of WW2, sharing their story through narration, dance and multi-media presentation of pictures and videos.
